The Honeywell 1900 was the next model and frankly NOTHING works as good as these units for both reliability and durability.That said, laptops can be sensitive to these units as these units need a full power USB port and draw roughly 420mAH. Even some desktops can rarely have an issue. If you have an issue, do NOT open a case please. These are configured out of the box to work in ANY Windows system-please do not mess with the program unless you need to do something application specific. If you have a power issue on your computer which is rare on a desktop, you can remove other USB devices near the scanner and it will work sometimes. You can return the unit for a Bluetooth model we sell too on Ebay and pay the difference-simply pick up the phone as we are reasonable folks or call us for presale questions and we are HAPPY to help you with questions to get you the right scanner. This is a plug and play scanner and these are TERRIFIC scanners! Not because I am selling them, but truly because they can scan at angles, imperfect bar codes, on plastic and are WAY AHEAD of the game as far as scanning goes and we sell a LOT of scanners! No nonsensical software to use like MetroSet Metro POS or the like, literally plug it in and open notepad and IT WORKS! Folks with laptops consider a Bluetooth model we sell instead as these do take a good bit of power via the USB port, and your laptop MAY (and even some desktops) have issues with a power problem as they take a lot of power. If you have this issue, you can return the scanner for a Bluetooth model which is more money (over double) once you pay the difference. If you want to do a virtual serial (DB9, also known as serial port) you can if you go to Metrologic but that does require some tinkering an you are better off with a serial scanner which we also have listed on Ebay (search under our name for NEW Metrologic cubit scanner).
