Unitech MS100-4G USB Handheld Pen / Wand Barcode Scanner Plug & Play Tested GOOD
Listing Title: Unitech MS100-4G USB Handheld Pen / Wand Barcode Scanner Plug & Play Tested GOOD Notes on Listing Title: Most of the title should be clear to most readers interested in buying a scanner, but there are a few terms in it that may need explanation, as follows: Pen / Wand are two different ways to describe the type / style of barcode scanner this is. Many people are more familiar with the larger, much bulkier kind of handheld scanner, often called a « scanner gun » (often with a « trigger » to set off a scan), that projects an infrared beam onto a barcode, with the beam then being reflected back to the « scanner gun » to be read like you see in store checkout lines, without needing to actually contact the barcode being scanned. The kind of scanner being sold here requires the user to draw it across and in contact with the surface of a barcode, as if « crossing it out » with an ink pen or marker. This allows this kind of scanner to be a lot smaller and lighter in weight than the no-contact « scanner gun » type of scanner. And being a simpler unit, with no moving parts like a « trigger » to wear out, one of these will almost certainly far outlast a « scanner gun ». Plug & Play is a term many people know, but I assume not everyone does. It means that for at least Windows and Apple systems (I’d guess it would work in Linux as well, but I haven’t tried it out there yet), all you need to do to get the basic function is to plug it into a computer, wait typically a few seconds for the system to recognize it, and then start using it. In other words, you won’t need to use a « driver CD » or download « drivers » from a web site before scanning barcodes can begin after you plug this into an available USB port on a computer. That’s all I had to do to get this to accurately scan a bar code and dump its contents into an open « window » on my PC running Windows 10. Please see the listing photo showing the barcode label I scanned (on a box of paper clips), the resulting matching string of numbers that appeared in a Microsoft Word blank document I’d opened, and what kind of software I was using. Now it’s possible that you’d get a broader range of functionality from this scanner if you installed software that is specific for this unit, but for I assume most users, there’s simply no need. Like the phrase says, you just « plug » it in and start « playing » with it. Tested GOOD could mean different things to different people. It could just mean « I tested it and it worked fine » without explaining exactly what I meant, or what I actually did to carry out such a « test ». That’s why I’ve included a listing photo showing what barcode I scanned and what characters showed up on my computer screen as a result of the scan. Some current listings for this item that I looked at to see what kind of testing or other claims were being made by competitors, say nothing about any kind of testing. And just because a scanner emitted some kind of infrared light when the seller plugged it in (if they even went that far) doesn’t mean it will actually work. I’ve tested several handheld « scanner guns » over the years and while most worked, some would only emit a dim and/or « fuzzy looking » infrared beam, and in such cases, those scanners didn’t work. So some sellers might just check to see if a beam is emitted, and then say they’d « tested » the item as working, without actually doing a successful « bar code reading » as I’ve done here. This is the exact content of the document shown in the listing photos in case it’s hard to read in the photos (set out in « italics » to make it better stand out here): « 042491999142 The above line of numbers was input using this Unitech hand scanner to scan the UPC code on a box of paper clips (also shown here, but not included as part of what’s being sold). It actually works better with a quick scan, as if one were crossing out the code being scanned, rather than dragging it across the bar code slowly. Much less bulky than a traditional “hand scanner”, and just as with the basic operations of a USB keyboard or mouse, no drivers required – plug it in and you’re good to go. That’s what I did, just before successfully doing the above scan. I was using MS Word 2013 and a Windows 10 Lenovo PC, into which this scanner was plugged, to generate this information. »You can of course look up the model / part number to get more information, and to see what if any optional software might be available. But for most users, the photos and description on this listing should tell you all you need to know. If you still have specific questions, I’ll try to answer them — but in general, you would have access to the same information I do and you’d get the same answer, but faster, if you looked it up on your own. IF COMPARING PRICES, DON’T FORGET THAT WE OFFER FREE « STANDARD SHIPPING » HERE, AND PROVIDE TESTING DETAILS OF THIS SPECIFIC UNIT; OTHER LISTINGS MAY HAVE A LOWER « BUY » PRICE BUT IMPOSE A SEPARATE SHIPPING CHARGE AND/OR MIGHT NOT SHOW HOW, IF AT ALL, THEY TEST There are some situations where I charge shipping separately from the Buy price, but this is not one of them. As a result, other listings might show a lower « Buy » price, but when you add in their shipping charges, your total cost will be more even though your separate « Buy » cost might be less from another vendor. And many vendors, even on an easy to test item like this, will hide behind phrases such as « taken from a working environment » (meaning: untested), or simply say « tested » without showing how they carried out a test. On this listing you don’t need to worry about getting a « DOA » unit as this comes to you tested exactly as shown. WE GET YOUR ITEM QUICKLY TO THE CHOSEN SHIPPING SERVICE AFTER PAYMENT: As long as we hand off your purchase to a shipper as quickly as we’ve committed ourselves to do, please don’t « ding » us with a lower rating on speed of shipping for what may happen afterwards due to things beyond our control — and also remember that if you opt for « free shipping », that means we’ll choose the least expensive (for us) delivery service (often meaning the slowest) that meets the delivery standards set by eBay for the kind of free shipping commitment we made in a listing. Thank you for your understanding! Our commitment on this sale is to get your item(s) to the shipper within one business day after payment is completed. And if a buyer is able to get payment completed by 11am California time on a non-holiday weekday (Mondays through Fridays), we are often able to ship the same day as paid. We may ship the same day as paid even if paid later, but the later in the day payment is made, the less likely same day shipment can take place. Depending on circumstances at this end and what shipment method applies, we may even be able to do « same day as paid » shipping on a Saturday, though our local USPS (often, but not always, the method and location of where and how we ship) closes at 4pm Saturdays (vs. 5pm on weekday business days). Since only one person here takes care of shipping (and just about anything else), we can’t literally promise in advance to achieve same-day-as-paid shipping, since things can always « come up » to prevent that for a smaller operator like us. We do, however, ship the same day as paid when we can, especially when it comes to relatively small size shipping packages and/or if a buyer is concerned enough about when they’d get their item to choose the Priority Mail option spelled out below), and our feedback shows that our customers appreciate the extra effort. FREE « STANDARD CLASS » SHIPPING (MEANS YOU MIGHT GET A FREE UPGRADE TO FASTER SERVICE): eBay defines « Standard Class » shipping as meaning a shipping service that is supposed to get a buyer’s item to them within 5 business days after being given to the shipper by the ebay seller (plus, in our case, our standard 1 business day after payment handling time between payment date and shipment date). When you choose « Free Shipping », we will pick from available carriers that will commit to delivering your item(s) to you at least that quickly, based on whichever method costs us the least. And if (as sometimes happens, especially if you aren’t far from our San Francisco Bay Area location, that means choosing Priority Mail when doing so is less expensive for us than using a usually slower service such as « USPS Ground Advantage » that only satisfies ebay’s « Standard Class » class shipping standards, we’ll « upgrade » you to USPS Priority Mail at no added cost. EXPEDITED SHIPPING VIA USPS PRIORITY MAIL FOR $4 EXTRA: You can decide at time of checkout to pay $4 extra for us to ship via USPS Priority Mail if you’re in a hurry (and want to be sure that we’ll use Priority Mail instead of a likely slower — possibly days slower, depending on circumstances — alternative allowed by the terms of this listing). Please note that we are referring here to « USPS Priority Mail », not the much more expensive « USPS Priority Mail Express » service (formerly known as « Express Mail »). FREE LOCAL PICKUP (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY): PLEASE READ IF YOU WANT TO PICK THIS UP FROM US AT NO CHARGE TO YOU OTHER THAN YOUR PURCHASE PRICE (plus tax if added by eBay): If you want the Free Local Pickup option, it is much better to make that choice during « ebay checkout » before you finish and pay. Ebay used to be very strict about that, though apparently it is now possible, if done very soon after purchase, to arrange with the seller for a local pickup, confirmed in writing by messages between buyer and seller so that ebay will be able to review those messages and decide if to approve an after-the-fact decision by the buyer to want the « local pickup » option, rather than the otherwise automatic choice by eBay of shipping if no other choice was made before Checkout was complete, to apply. Since I almost always have my listings set up to have a one business day turnaround time between date of payment and date of shipment (this will sometimes be temporarily seen as 2 or more days, usually because I will be out of town for a few days at some point not long after the listing appears and won’t be able to ship as quickly as usual after a purchase), any post-payment wish to change your choice on this topic has to be done quickly so that I don’t get a « ding » on my timely shipments record for not shipping as fast as the listing says I would do, that I then have to spend would could be an hour or more on the phone, trying to get ebay to remove. And one more thing: We’re a small outfit that does not have an always-available pickup or customer service department, so pickups must be by appointment only. Please don’t show up unannounced and assume you can be helped. We’re reasonable people at this end, however, as our feedback should show, so if we work together, setting up an appointment, possibly including evenings and weekends depending on our mutual schedules at the time of purchase, that works for all should not be difficult. Thanks! RETURNS IN GENERAL: Please be sure to save all shipping and packing materials (box, padding, etc.) for the length of the potential return period, in the event a return is to take place. If you have any questions at all about the condition of the materials, however, please contact us first to confirm that we would authorize you to re-use those materials in returning an item to us, since sometimes those materials get chewed up enough during initial delivery that they need to be repaired or replaced before being re-used. BUYER NO-FAULT RETURNS: 30 calendar day return time, running from date of first attempt at delivery by the chosen shipper to your ebay verified shipping address, if you return these for any or no reason in the same condition as sent, at your expense. However, if you do something that causes one of these to fail in use, e.g., if you spill your drink into one of these (or whatever computer it’s plugged into at the time) and it shorts out and dies, that is a good example of something that would not qualify as a « BUYER NO-FAULT RETURN ». CLAIMED SELLER FAULT RETURNS: Ebay lets you return almost anything within 30 days after receiving it, if what was purchased is not what the listing represented it to be, no matter what limitations a seller may try to put on the reasons for return (and many do). Please see exact details as provided by eBay at the top of this listing. To the extent that ebay allows it, you must use a shipping class and type that costs no more than what we used to ship your item(s) to you.
